Yorkshire Knitting Sheaths

I recently produced a short educational video about Yorkshire Knitting Sheaths for the virtual Yarndale show taking place this coming weekend. The video presents the various types of knitting sheaths that were made and used in Yorkshire until the early twentieth century. I also demonstrate how they were used.

Good morning, love your info on knitting sheaths, my dad collects them and would love to share knowledge. He is talking with Hawes Museum about exhibiting there next year.

I have my great grandmother’s knitting sheath, although I never knew it’s title. It is made of brass and heart shaped with an old piece of string which would have kept it attached to the belt. I was told it was worn on a belt and used to knit with ease throughout the day. My grandmother was an extremely fast knitted( born in 1908) and use to knit long John’s for both her brothers, as a young girl. As children we would take turns with who had a jumper or outfit knitted by her. She had stacks of stitchcraft books which we could choose our patterns from. She would knit a jumper in a few hours.
