I’ve previously blogged about the history of my home which was built in 1896/7 during the Arts and Crafts period. I am working on reflecting that in the decor, and of course wish to include period-appropriate knitting. So since Christmas I’ve been knitting some Victorian style sheet and pillowcase edgings.
We are currently refurbishing the spare bedroom. Having recently received a sizeable tax rebate, at Christmas I bought an antique Arts and Crafts oak double bed for the room, and the sheet and pillowcase set will be used on that. I’m also currently making some Roman blinds for the bedroom window using fabric based on a May Morris design. I’ll post about those later this year, ie when they are finished and have been hung.
The sheet and pillowcase edging are based on a lace pattern from Weldon’s Practical Knitter fourteenth series, first published in July 1890. The original pattern was called “Irish Lace”. I’ve expanded the original (seen in the image below from Practical Knitter) to make a wider edging which I’ve named “Highroyd”, the name of the terrace of four houses that Thomas Baldwin had built, in which my house was Number 1.

Here’s a photo of my expanded version:

And here’s a chart for the Highroyd edging:
