Choosing Wool

With their old mattresses having grown lumpily uncomfortable, my two youngest boys (now 16 and 18!) needed new ones. So last week we scoured a few websites, carefully checking reviews, to find some. These days I am much more environmentally conscious than when we bought their previous ones, so I was looking for natural fibres. This is getting easier for clothing (I now buy most of my clothes from Thought), but for mattresses it was very difficult. None of the mainstream companies we looked at had natural fibre options. Fortunately I had recently bought some wool quilts, so I checked the company I bought those from. Sure enough, the Woolroom also do wool mattresses. Not only are their mattresses filled with wool, but the mattess casings are also made from a wool blend fabric, so we bought them. Even though they were very costly, I’m hugely pleased we did this. The mattresses came with complimentary mattress protectors, also entirely natural (wool and cotton), and are neither too soft nor too firm. An added bonus is that being filled with wool, which is naturally thermal, they will help my boys keep cool in summer and warm in winter. We will soon be buying one for our own bed!
