Photographing Yarn

I needed photos for the shop pages for Yorkshire Warmth, and I wanted those photos to be artistic, so I worked on ideas for styling the yarn, creating a long list of possible photo props and settings. In the end I decided on a seasonal idea, presenting the yarn with an autumn theme. This involved collecting fallen leaves, so early last week I made a few stops during the school run when I spotted trees with particularly beautiful autumn foliage. Scattered on hessian around piles of yarn, these gave a strong nature feel to the photos.

Alas, it rained a lot last week, so it was difficult to find a photo-friendly hour. Happily there was a sunny period after I returned from the school run on Wednesday. So Tom and Toby helped me to do the shoot, Tom portering piles of yarn in and out of the house, while Toby held a diffuser screen aloft to prevent the strong sun from creating glare and shadow in the photos.
