I support Ravelry!

Following numerous instances of racist abuse on the site relating to support of the current US president, last Sunday Ravelry instigated a new policy banning use of their space for support of Mr. Trump and his administration. Announcing the policy they stated that support for Trump and his administration is support of ‘open white supremacy’. I agree with that statement.

The new policy has of course outraged folk who support Trump, most (all?) of whom don’t consider themselves to be racist. Many are now boycotting Ravelry, and any businesses that have expressed support for the policy. They don’t see that by being willing to take action on such a point, but not against racial injustice, they make their racism manifest.

Nevertheless, if you’re a Trump supporter I haven’t given up on you. I am a white woman on the journey of becoming anti-racist, and I want you to be on that journey too. If you’re uncomfortable with being deemed racist, I think there’s hope for you. I urge you to find an anti-racism teacher and start the work that is required to deal with that discomfort. It involves focusing on making yourself truly great, which is the only way to make America so.

Yesterday I got an e-mail from someone who was talking about Ravelry’s “controversial” decisions. This is probably what she was talking about. I totally agree with Ravelry’s decision. They’re not banning Trump supporters, just pro-Trump posts. And I like Ann’s post too.
