The Comical Yorkshire Tale Of Keziah Throp

Watch me live (via YouTube) on Saturday the 6th of February as I read the comical and instructive Yorkshire folk tale ‘Throp’s Wife’, as written by F. W. Moorman (1872-1918).

Using my broadest Yorkshire accent, I will entertainingly introduce and read the comical Yorkshire folk tale ‘Throp’s Wife’ as written by Fredric William Moorman in ‘Tales of the Ridings’.

The tale of ‘Throp’s Wife’ featured in the BBC Home Service (North) in 1938, for which the Radio Times listing stated:

“That brilliant and indefatigable student of the words and idioms of Yorkshire folk speech, the late F. W. Moorman , who was Professor of English Language in Leeds University, once told how, intrigued by the’ saying ‘As thrang as Throp’s wife’ and long baffled in his search for its origin, he journeyed through the West Riding in search of someone who could explain the phrase. The explanation came from an old Yorkshireman met in a West Riding inn at Cowling Hill.”

Thrang (ie ‘busy’) at the time of the event (3pm GMT)? Your ticket gives you access to both the live event (via YouTube) and to the recording afterwards, which will remain on YouTube until the end of April. It will be unlisted, so do take care of your ticket, which can be purchased here.

Can’t decide what to pay for your ticket? I think anything from £1 to £20 is appropriate, and I am grateful for your generosity. Thank you! 🥰

Proceeds from this event will be evenly split between the following Labour Party interests:

1) My campaign to become a Labour councillor for Skircoat in Halifax (one of the towns that features in the tale).

2) Tracy Brabin’s campaign to become the Labour Mayor of West Yorkshire.

3) Brighouse Labour Party (my local Labour branch).
