This little sheep went to market!

For the sake of the planet I am doing my best to use natural fibre instead oil-based fibres for my clothing. As in the UK sheep’s wool is the most prolific natural fibre produced for knitting, I have a special focus on this. But did you know sheep have lots of other excellent uses. Here’s a guide:

Sheep uses 101

In my house we have wool carpets and wool insulation, and I have lots of wool clothing that I have consciously purchased, not just my own handknitted clothing. What wool products do you have?

(I know this is an old post, but my question is new, August 2023.)
I’ve seen photos of different bone objects in a curved-heart shape (including knitting sheaths—I think you show some— and Portuguese knitting “pins”/hooks). Would you happen to know whether such knitting sheaths are carved out of a particular (presumably sheep’s) bone?

  • I’m afraid I don’t know this, though I would think the carver would use whatever bone was available. I do know that in days gone by there were bone collectors who used to go from door to door in towns and cities to collect bone as it had many uses, including for ubiquitous cutlery handles.
