Last week I published the pattern for ‘Eirwen’, a short cape with a lace body and a cowl neck.
The name ‘Eirwen’ is Welsh for ‘snow white’, chosen because I wanted a name that reflects the fairytale appearance of the cape, which I designed to evoke the beauty of snow-capped mountains, snowflakes and icicles. Several things in the cape carry this inspiration; the strong white colour and abundant soft halo of the yarn, the nupps (Estonian bobbles), the jagged edges of the solid areas in the lace, and the dot lace at the bottom edge. I think the overall effect is dramatically beautiful, like the wintry elements that inspired it.
The excellent photography is the work of my very talented friend, Woolly Wormhead, who also did the photography for Lace Knits. If you are familiar with my work you will recognise the model, Alice Cudworth, who has modelled for several of my books.
Eirwen looks gorgeous! Don’t I remember seeing you designing this at Brew, quite a while ago? Good to see it’s turned out so well.
Thank you Barbara! Yes, it took this design a long time to reach publication. It takes some designs a very long time to get from concept to publication. There are so many stages to the journey…
