Please note that the pattern parts for ‘Where’s My Cow?’ have now been deleted from my website. The full pattern will shortly be available to purchase.
A few weeks ago I spent hours searching for a mathematical formula to help me calculate the total area of a cone! This was in the interests of being able to calculate, without having to knit all 5 sizes in order to do so, the yardage requirements for ‘Where’s My Cow?’.
Because the top of the romper is basically a cone I thought that with the correct formula there must be a quick way to calculate the total number of stitches in each size on the basis of knowing the number of stitches at the bottom, and the number of rounds to be worked. Although my dear sister is a very good mathematician, it was my wonderful husband who came up trumps (BA and MA in Physics) and kindly emailed me the formula I needed.:
a(1) = number of sts in first round
n = number of decreases in each round
a(n) = a(1) -(n-1) x n
S(n) = (a(1)+a(n)) x n/2
So there!
Of course, it then took quite a bit of help from him to apply it in a way that yielded the data I needed. Nevertheless, afterwards I felt like a very clever girl!! ;0)
This week’s pattern: I recommend the two circulars method of knitting in the round, or magic loop method. Once the sleeves have been joined have the front and adjacent half of each sleeve on one circular/loop, and the back and the other half of each sleeve on the other circular/loop.
