‘Wesley Bob’ is an old Yorkshire dialect term for Christmas tree decorations. These ones are carefully designed to make beautifully spherical ornaments.There are 6 versions in this pattern: 3 motif styles in main and reverse colourways – 6 charts in all. Because they all feature pretty vertical stripes, the Wesley Bobs work particularly well together as a set.
Each Wesley Bob is 8cm/3” tall from base to top, not including the hanging loop, and is 23cm/9” around.
The pattern includes a very clearly illustrated, step-by-step tutorial (digital drawings) for the loop cast-on method. This creates a drawstring opening for stuffing purposes.
The pattern also includes step-by-step written instructions to make the Wesley Bobs, from casting on to hanging on your tree!
The hanging loop is a non-bulky 2-stitch knitted i-cord, which is very easy to work (instructed in the pattern).
The pictured sample was made with baa ram ewe ‘Titus’. You may substitute any even 4ply/fingering weight yarn. As each Wesley Bob only uses 10 metres/12 yards each of two colours, they are an ideal project for using up yarn oddments. Tension/gauge after blocking is 32 stitches and 34 rounds per 10cm/4″ in stranded pattern. Suggested needle size is 2.5mm/US 1½.

I loved knitting these for my Christmas tree, and they look gorgeous on it! The loop cast on is clever, and the instructions are very clear. I knit mine on dpns as there are 4 pattern repeats in each round. I also knit them “inside out” so that my stranding did not pull tight between needles.
