Saturday 18 July | 10.00am – 4.30pm
The Art Room, Fletcher’s Mill, Dean Clough, Halifax

Have you always been intrigued by steeking but nervous about taking scissors to your knitting? This practical and supportive workshop will give you the knowledge and confidence to cut your knitting and achieve a professional finish.

Steeking is a traditional technique used in stranded colourwork knitting, particularly in Fair Isle and Scandinavian knitting, allowing garments to be worked in the round and then cut open to create cardigans, armholes and neck openings. While the thought of cutting into hand-knitted fabric can feel daunting, with the right preparation and techniques it becomes a straightforward and invaluable skill.

During this full-day workshop, we will explore a range of methods for reinforcing knitting before steeking, including traditional crochet reinforcements worked with a crochet hook, hand-sewn methods, and machine-sewn approaches. We will also look at techniques that can be used after cutting to strengthen and stabilise steek edges. Throughout the day, we will discuss the advantages of different methods and when each might be most appropriate.

You will also learn how to finish and manage steek edges after cutting, including a variety of neat and professional ways to conceal, secure and incorporate them into your finished garment.

The workshop will include:

  • Understanding how and why steeking works
  • Preparing knitted fabric for steeking
  • Reinforcing steeks using crochet techniques
  • Hand-sewn and machine-sewn steek reinforcements
  • Cutting steeked fabric safely and confidently
  • Finishing and securing steek edges
  • Choosing the most appropriate technique for different projects
  • Plenty of opportunity for questions and hands-on practice

Participants will receive a preparation sheet upon booking, containing instructions for a number of small knitted swatches that should be completed and brought to the workshop. These swatches will provide the basis for the practical exercises undertaken during the day.

Whether you are considering your first steeked cardigan or would simply like to add another valuable technique to your knitting repertoire, this workshop will equip you with the skills and confidence to cut your knitting with purpose rather than fear.

Please note: There will be a one-hour break for lunch. Participants should bring their completed swatches, basic knitting tools, and a packed lunch, or make use of the cafés and food outlets available at Dean Clough.
