Step into the stitches of history with the Knitter’s Guided Walking Tour Of Dent, a unique walking tour led by Yorkshire’s foremost expert on the history of knitting in the region. This engaging three-hour experience explores not only the rich heritage of Dent itself, but its remarkable status as the principal centre of England’s rural handknitting industry for centuries.
Discover England’s Knitting Capital
Nestled in the beautiful landscape of the Yorkshire Dales, Dent was once alive with the rhythmic click of knitting needles. For generations, knitting shaped daily life here — economically, socially, and culturally. Hundreds of years before factory production took hold, Dent’s skilled knitters supplied stockings and woollens across the country, building a cottage industry of national importance.
On this tour, you’ll uncover:
- How Dent became England’s leading hub of rural handknitting
- The structure of the cottage knitting industry and how it operated
- The lives and working conditions of Dent’s knitters
- Stories of named local knitters whose work and livelihoods defined the village
- The lasting legacy of knitting on Dent’s landscape and community
Through carefully researched stories and vivid historical detail, you’ll gain a deep understanding of how widespread and economically vital handknitting once was — and how integral it was to the identity of Dent.
A Walk Through Living History
This is a gentle walking tour around the village, stopping at key historic points connected to Dent’s knitting heritage. As we explore, the village itself becomes our open-air archive — cottages, lanes, and gathering places revealing stories of industry, resilience, and craft.
Whether you’re a passionate knitter, a textile enthusiast, a social historian, or simply curious about Yorkshire’s past, this tour offers a fascinating and often surprising perspective on rural industry.
