‘She expected every moment that some of the gentlemen would enter the room. She wished, she feared that the master of the house might be amongst them; and whether she wished or feared it most, she could scarcely determine.’ (Pride and Prejudice, Chapter 45)

The jumper (US ‘sweater’) is knitted seamlessly in the round from the bottom up with raglan shaping at the yoke and a steeked neckline. Thus purling in the colourwork pattern is entirely avoided. The shaped front panel is created with a clever use of increases and decreases to make the colourwork bands travel, a technique inspired by the work of fellow designer, Kieran Foley. For guidance with the advanced knitting techniques involved please see ‘Tutorials’.

The pattern is graded for a range of ten sizes, from 32 to 50 inch chest circumferences. When finished the jumper has 2.5cm/1″ of positive ease at the chest.

Suggested needle size is 3mm/US 2½, or size required to get the required tension/gauge. This is 32 stitches and 40 rounds per 10cm/4″ in stranded pattern before blocking.

The pictured sample was made with Jamieson’s and Smith’s shetland jumnperweight. This is a 4ply/fingering weight wool yarn that comes in a wide variety of colours.

The Pemberley pattern is also available in ‘Novel Knits’ (see ‘Books’).
