Medieval heraldic design and a loyal cheer feature in these ladies socks that I originally designed for friends in a Potter-themed knitting group. They have since become one of my most popular designs. Clearly knitters love Harry!

The socks are knitted in the round using stranded technique on 2.5mm/US1½ DPNs at a tension of 44 rounds and 38 stitches to 10cm/4". Those who are proficient with other popular techniques for knitting narrow tubes (with two circular needles or 'magic loop') should find the pattern easy to adapt to these styles.

The pattern gives full instructions for knitting each element of the sock with all relevant charts included. It also provides clear guidance for adapting the calf for larger sizes, with a choice of two foot lengths ('short -medium', and 'long').

Materials required are 100g each of a dark red and a golden yellow 4ply (fingering-weight) sock yarn and some knitting-in elastic (for the cuffs). While 100g of the main (dark red) colour is sufficient for the main size, a little more of this colour may be required for larger legs.

Although this original design is inspired by the fiction of J.K. Rowling, it is not official or licensed merchandise, and is not intended to be perceived as such.
